Single Layer or Double Layer? Taper or No Taper? Which option is right for my dog? There is no right or wrong option for your dog when choosing single or double layer but we have a bit of information about each to allow your to choose what you feel suits your needs best.
Single Layer:
Single Layer collars are one single strap of leather. The crystals are set into this single strap. The crystal holder tines are turned on the backside to prevent/reduce any hair catching or scratching of your dogs neck. You should ALWAYS inspect your dogs collar prior to use including the back. Checking the crystal holder tines.
If you have a dog with a sensitive neck, want this collar to be a daily wear collar, or are concerned about any hair catching then double layer may be the better option for you. However one reason to choose single layer is if you are trying to reduce the bulk for a smaller dog.
Double Layer Same Width Top Panel & Base
Double layer collars are a single strap of leather as the base of the collar PLUS a top panel where the crystals are set into. The base layer is put together similar to the single layer to maintain its strength and durability. After the base layer is complete, the top panel of leather is created (this top panel is where the crystals are set into). The tines of the crystal holders are still turned in, and set flat to reduce any rubbing of the leather layers. This top panel of leather is then riveted onto the base layer, so that the smooth base layer of leather is what sits against your dogs neck. This allows for complete protection of your dogs neck against any metal tines causing rubbing, or hair catching. This top panel of leather however does increase the bulk. Pictured is a Double layer collar where the base layer and the top panel are the same width. In this instance, the Renegade with a 2.25” top panel and a 2.25” base layer. Choosing the Double layer same width option you get the protection of the base layer without increasing the width of the collar itself.
Double Layer 1/4” Wider Base
Double Layer 1/4” wider still is the same Double Layer collar as described above, but if you like just a lil more width on your collars you can choose to make the base layer 1/4” wider to allow a little peek of the base layer of leather showing on each side of the top panel. Some customers choose this option for dogs with long hair. The little extra width helps to push the hair out of the way so you can see that beautiful bling! You can see in “The Circe” pictured to the right. The top panel riveted on and the little extra leather showing above and below the top design panel.
Tapering your collar?
We can taper the single layer strap, or the base layer strap of leather from its original width to a slightly narrower width to reduce bulk in the collar, and allow for more free movement for your dogs neck. Some customers choose to taper their collar so their smaller dog, for example, can pull off some of the wider widths. By tapering, your dog will still have the narrow bottom half of the collar under the chin area that they are used to. Some photos attached below show some of our tapering options. We can taper your collar from the original width down to 1.5”, 1.25”, 1” or .75”. The taper is ONLY in the buckle area so it does not reduce the width of the entire collar.
